9.5 evinrude, 1968 - runs great when it runs but at any moment it could just die. I squeeze the ball on the gas tank and it is soft. I was running wide open and I kept squeezing the ball I made it back to the landing. I am not great at this stuff. any ideas?

It could be lots of stuff going on with the little flat-head. Obvious, but overlooked many times, did you have the fuel tank vent open? If not, that will create a starved condition.

What kind of maintenance and tune-up have you done?

If it runs ok when you squeeze the priming bulb, indicates a bad fuel pump.
