Hey Guy's. Been looking along time but no need to ask a newbee question.
I am looking for a kiker motoy for my 20 1984 GW. I have found a 25 horse Johnson but I do not know if it is a long shaft or a short shaft. How do I tell?
The best part is the motor comes attached to another boat! It is a 1968 Starcraft with a HEAVY home built trailer under it. The boat needs cleaning up, the trailer is wired and best of all the motor has VERY low hours on it, the asking price is $800.00 does this sound good?

Thanks
Johnny

If it is a long shaft it will have a very obvious 5 inch extension housing above the lower unit gearcase.

25hp is an awfully big kicker, even for a 20-foot. You want to size a kicker to run up a reasonable amount past idle at troll or you'll be decarbing your life away.

My dad runs a 9.9 johnson for a kicker, he has a 21ft fiberglass center console. It pushes great on that heavy boat. If you go much bigger is it still considered a kicker?;)

Sizing kind of depends on the hull shape, boat weight, and what your troll speed is going to be. I'd bet 9.9 is right in the slot though. Probably wouldn't hurt to rent or borrow one for a day and see how it goes. Or, talk to a dealer for your make of boat and see what they normally set it up with.

25hp might be fine, it just seems awfully big for a kicker to me.
