I HAVE A BOAT WITH I/O MOTOR. NOT SURE THE YEAR, THIS IS WHAT I CAN FIND ON IT.
BZC
2.24.87
GM6269732
FIRING ORDER 165432

WHEN I START SOMETIME IT WILL BACK FIRE. AND NOW AFTER I CHANGED THE SPARK PLUG. WHEN REV IT UP IT WILL RUN OVER 6000 RPM. WHEN I PUT IT IN GEAR IT DOES NOT WANT TO GO OVER 4500 RPM. AND IS REAL SLOW...

I SEE THE FIRING ORDER LISTED BUT WHAT CLINDER WOULD BE NIMER 1

Re: new BOAT OWNER HAVING PROBLEMS

Going out on a limb here and guessing that this is a 1987 4.3 V6. IF it is a 4.3 then the cylinder numbers are cast into the top of the intake manifold.

STOP] reving your engine in neutral, it doesn't mean anything and you are going to break things.

IF it is a 4.3, then 4500 RPM at WOT ain't all that bad.

Seriously though, more info is needed from you. Is it OMC, Volvo, Merc, Yamaha????? 2 or 4 bbl carb???

Re: new BOAT OWNER HAVING PROBLEMS

i'm not sure i thought it was 4.3L GMC motor and the back says OMC. it has a 2 brl carb. when i got it we took it out ever weekend and pulled a tube it ran fine. then the points went out and i replave them. It still ran fine. but the last 2 times i took it out it does not want to run. it will not gain speed like it use to. it takes a long to to plan out. even with a small kid on the tube. (thanks for your help)

ALSO i will stop reving it up that high...

Are you using the trim???? Have you ever operated an IO with trim before? What year is the boat?, and what length and type boat.
Most boat engines should run around 4200 to 4800 rpm at WOT (Wide Open Throttle) so rpm is not your problem, possibly.

Unavoidable - it is a boat, and it is an OMC - you gotta double whammy!

If you don't know the age of your ignition components, then by all means, it is time for a new cap, rotor and plugs.

Did you get automotive points? They won't last more than a few hours at best. You need marine points.

There's Nothing Wrong with an I/O,......... I Love'm.......

It's the OMC that's the Problem..........

Get it Running,+ Dump it for a boat with a drive built by an Existing Manufacturer,.............

That means No OMCs, or Yamahas, or those German 1s that I see talked about now,+ then..........

Which leaves you a Choice of Mercruiser or Volvo.......... Which both run Chevy engines.....

Re: new BOAT OWNER HAVING PROBLEMS

yes i do. how do i get marine parts (will an auto part store have them?) because i don't know what motor i have we just match the points up with what ever he had in the back of the auto part store.
Where could i find any type of number to tell me what kind of motor it is?

(just wondering why would automotive points won't last?)

Re: new BOAT OWNER HAVING PROBLEMS

NAPA has a good line of marine parts made by Sierra. Don't try Autozone or Pep Boys ect...They have no clue on marine parts.

Replace points again, plugs, wires, cap, rotor and condesor. Make sure the Dwell is set correctly. Then if it still runs bad you know you have ruled out the ignition except for the coil. Use only AC MR43T plugs..gapped at .035

The OMC drive can still last you a long time if properly maintained. It is still a GM engine.

Re: new BOAT OWNER HAVING PROBLEMS

You need to make sure you are only using marine parts on your boat especially anything electrical or you will have a serious fireworks display on your hands. Boats with Auto parts go boom, I think the coil is indeed different for marine apps.

Re: new BOAT OWNER HAVING PROBLEMS

Great advice on using marine parts. however the coil is one thing that you can use a auto eqivilent. Some folks will tell you that you have to get an epoxy filled coil for a boat, because of the vibration, but the stock Merc coils are oil filled and they hold up just fine. You will need to make sure you are replacing like for like (internal or external resistor) though.
