Lower shift cable tool

Will a long socket work in place of the lower shift cable tool when replacing the shift cable in lower end?

How nessary is the out dirve installation tool?

None I ever had were long enough, had to buy the tool. If your replacing the drive by yourself it's a great tool but not a must have.

I just did mine and used both. They came in handy and I feel it was worth the few extra bucks. I always figure when I'm doing the work myself I can afford to buy the tools.

unless you can weld 2 sockets together you`ll need the special socket. the standard deep socket isn`t deep enough.

I did exactly what Bt Doctur mentioned. I welded a couple of deep well sockets together - it's not pretty, but it gets the job done. I have used it several times over the past few years.

I just unscrew the white plastic guide piece out of the new cable and use a regular socket to install the cable, then screw the guide back in. It may take pliers to loosen it to start, if it flattens it a little bit, just squeeze the wide edges a bit no big deal.
Have done hundreds like that with no problem.
