1986 aplha one sterndrive how do u check the oil level?

On my 1991 alpha gen 2 drive there is an oil level indicator at the top of the drive.On this 86 there is only a vent plug on the side at the top.

Remove the upper plug and make sure the gear lube is at the bottom of the hole the plug goes in.

PS: the 91 and 92 Alpha drives are the only ones with the dipstick. Merc then went to the reservoir inside the boat.
