My 35 johnson will intermittently skip or jerk as if hitting a log while under load, I have been into the lower unit and cannot find any evidence of clutch dog slipping, or any gear damage. I have replaced power pack and rectifier and rebuilt carb. can anyone guide me as to what else could cause this?

I'm going out to check some electrical on my motor, I'll be back shortly.

Forget the electrical. It's the lower unit. Clutch dog and forward gear. Don't feel bad, everybody looks at those things and says there is nothing wrong with them. Everybody learns too.
