i took a mid 90s bow rider out for a spin.it has a carbureted 4.3 v6.center bolt valve covers.it wasnt running too good when all of a sudden there was a bang.i turned to see a cloud of smoke.when i checked under the cover i could see that the vale covers were blown outwards and pushed the gaskets rite out.could this have been gas in the oil or something like that.

Re: exploding mercruiser

It Can't Liquid Lock if it's going Directly to the Base,+ Not thru the Intake.........

That's why I asked about the Fuel Pump......

Re: exploding mercruiser

Unlike an automotive engine, the mechanical fuel pumps also have a hose on them going to the carb. If the diaphram leaks, it will put fuel into the engine oil, but it will also dumps raw gas into the carb instead of out on the road like a car does. If this keeps up long enough you have a lot of extra gas in the oil and a real rich condition while running. One backfire with all that extra gas and.......... well, you know the rest of the story.
