Tilt and Trim malfunction

I just bought a '88 bayliner capri 1750 w/2.3 ltr OMC Cobra. after first time out motor wont trim Up. will trim down. i jumped the solenoid to a hot wire and it trimmed up. is my problem wires, or a bad solenoid?

You will need to do a couple of voltage tests to determine this.
You will note on your solenoid, you could have 3 or 4 terminals, two large and either 1 or 2 small.
Check the small terminal/s and see if power is getting to the blue one when you activate the trim up button. If you get power there, verify the ground is ok. May be either a seperate small terminal or the housing where it's bolted.
If you are getting power to the wire the switch and wiring to the solenoid are ok.
Then check the 2 large terminals. 1 should always be hot and will be red with a purple stripe. The other wire is going to the pump. If you have power on the red purple wire, then the solenoid is bad.
