Hello all, new to this forum. I have a 2000 BF130 with about 2300-2600 hours (not sure as 1st hour meter failed) new hour meter has 1800 on it.

Anyway I was wondering what type of service/maint I should be planning on if any. I follow all scheduled maint - oil/lube/fuel filters/plugs/valve adjustments, etc.

I was wondering more about things like the timing chain, getting a valve job (new guides, etc), Piston Rings, etc. It runs great. It does smoke some and leaves a NASTY black residue all over the middle part of the motor.

Any Honda people out there will high hours on the motors that can give me any info? Thanks!!

Man that sounds great. We've got a 2001 with about 700 hrs so I like what I hear. Someone with more knowledge than I can comment on this because it may do more harm than good at that number of hours but have you done a decarb? I did one at about 575 hrs and she was clean as a whistle but 2500 is a whole different story. Good luck, Granpa

Finally did a compression and leak down test. Has about 2500 hours now.

Compression

#1 115lbs
#2 115lbs
#3 115lbs
#4 95lbs

They all showed some leak down. My friend said it was the rings as air was coming out of the crankcase dip stick hole. Of course the most air came out of #4.

Anybody know what the compression should be? I have order a repair manual but am curious.

Should I be able to find a Honda Outboor Mechanic that will tear it apart and put in rings and rod bearings, hone the cylinders and give it a valve job or is everyone just going to tell me to get a new power head.

Mikemad - Believe the compression spec for a BF130 is 199-228 psi @ 300 rpm. Mine had about 200 psi on all four cylinders when checked at about 1000 hours. Your readings, if taken at something like 300 rpm, are low. If you can find a certified Honda tech in your area, then suggest you get an estimate to have the work you describe done. Get the cost of a new powerhead including installation and go with the cheaper. If the tech can do a good job at a substantial saving, you'd have a nearly good-as-new engine for less cost. Either way you'd need a good tech to replace the powerhead or do the overhaul. JMHO. Good luck.
