I have a question regarding A tachomoter. I have a 17f bowrider boat in which the tach does not work. How important is it to have that working? could you please explain how to read the tach? what about the numbers the higher the RPM's the better or the lower the better? and what should i do?

Thanks in advance and sorry for the ignorance

Re: Tachometer Question

Outboard motors have a recommended maximum rpm range , generally somewhere between 5000-6000 rpm. The tach lets you see results in changes made by running different props , motor set-up , trim angles , etc. It can also indicate engine problems when you see the operating rpm's have dropped or raised above the normal range.
I would replace the tach if it isnt working or cannot be repaired( it could be only a wiring problem ) .
Do not apologize for not knowing ,thats what this forum is all about !
