Howdy:

I have a mando alternator part# 12449, AR-150 , J1171 on my 1990 merc 5.7
I am looking at replacing it, can I replace it with one of those new single wire alternators? Or should I just keep it simple and replace with a like one?
Would it be better to just have the old one rebuilt by a local shop?

Thanks

Curious to understand why you think they are junk. I have seen very long life with mando alternators. Have also seen the GM alternators fail prematurely.

Thanks for your insightful answer... So anyone else have any input?
By the way this unit is the ORIGINAL Alternator (1990), and it is still working, just rusted all to hell... So in my book that is pretty impressive....

Re: Mando Alternator Question

Ooh yeah, had that since I bought it... I have bad luck so I try to play everything towards the cautious side.. HAHA.. BUT I did break down last year crabbing... Luckily I had a friend who knew someone we were able to call on cell.. VHF didnt work worth a crap... Since I am pulling engine I figured I would replace some stuff while I had it out, make sure things went well this year. The ladies arent too thrilled when the boat breaks down.. LOL
