1997 3.0ltr 4 cyl merc

Hi Guys,

Can someone tell me if I should have a gasket between my thermostat and the housing other than the standard "paper" gasket my engine seems to run a little cool...my buddy has an OMC and he has a rubber gasket between the thermostat and the slot where it sits.

Can anyone help me?

I mean the hollowed out circular area where the thermostat recesses itself in the housing, is there a rubber washer or something that should go between the steel housing and the thermostat to create a seal?

Go down to standard cooling systems.....
Does any of these look like yours?...
I'm gonna guess that you need one.......​

I checked all 3 diagrams and none look like mine, but your right in all 3 it shows a rubber gasket either on top or underneath the thermostat, I geuss I will ask the mercury dealer in town.

The link Haut gave you is for a V8 engine, so it's not the same at all.

It doesn't show any rubber gasket, only the paper.

How deep is the groove in the thermostat hsg. There could be a rubber ring with the thermostat that doesn't show on the parts breakdown, but I doubt it.

The groove is just enough to recess the thermostat...maybe and 1/8th of an inch???

Maybe I should buy a new thermostat and see if it comes with it???

I have changed my 1995 3.0 many times

Just a stat and gasket No rubber ring ,it works fine
