Replace impeller?

My brother in law has a Black Max 6 cyl. Not sure of HP or Mod#
Anyway, the last trip to the river he had a powerpak replaced. We went to launch the boat and it wouldn't start. We pulled it out and he tried again figuring he could turn it off if it started, well, it fired up out of the water and he couldn't get it to turn off. It was running out of water for about 20-30 seconds before the mechanic ran over and shorted it out.
I told my brother in law that he most diffeniatly needs the change the impeller out because everyone always says it only takes 5 seconds to waist the impeller.
But he said he tested the motor and water was pumping at normal pressure and he is not going to change it.
Your thoughts of encouragement would be appreciated I don't want him to fry his motor.
Thank you

Re: Replace impeller?

Does it pump normally at idle? If so, it probably survived, just keep an eye on it for a while to be sure.

Re: Replace impeller?

This is from an 87 Mercruiser service bulletin. The pump and impeller are the same as used in the older outboards.
There is SOME damage to his impeller. How long it lasts is impossible to say.
It's more like how long does he want to press his luck.
