Just ran across this quote from Ronald Reagan. I think he hit the nail on the head.

"You and I are told increasingly that we have to choose between left or right. Well I would like to suggest that the there is no such thing as a left or a right. There is only an up or down.- up to a man's age old dream, the ultimate in individual freedom consistant with law and order, or down to the ant heap of totalitarianism. And regardless of their sincerety, their humanitarian motives, those who would trade our freedom for security have embarked on this downward course."

A rather brilliant articulation I would say. And without a doubt, down we are headed at the hands of the current crop of 'downies'!

At another time he states:

"..it doesn't require expropriation or confiscation of private property or business to impose socialism on people. What does it mean whether you hold the deed or the title to your business or property if the government holds the power of life and death over that business or property? Such machinery already exists. The government can find some charge to bring against any concern it chooses to prosecute. Every businessman has his own tale of harassment.

Somewhere a perversion has taken place. Our natural, inalienable rights are now considered to to be a dispensation of government, and freedom has never been so fragile, so close to slipping from our grasp as it is this moment"

IMHO, much truer today than when it was spoken!

Here is another:

"...the full power of centralized government was the very thing that the Founding Fathers sought to minimize. They knew that governments do not control things. A government can't control the economy without controlling people. And they knew when government sets out to do that, it must use force and coercion to achieve its purpose. They also knew, those Founding Fathers, that outside of its legitimate functions, government does nothing as well or as economically as the private sector of the economy."

Now wouldn't it be a miracle if Government was taught in schools from the Founders perspective?

Good evidence of why he was called "The Great Communicator".

IMHO, it would be well if more people would heed his communications than those of Hillary or Pelosi, et al.

Preying on peoples fear is a terrible thing, when its used by politicians to stir up support for their agenda.
It worked for them back then and it continues to do so today. Its a real sad state of affairs, is it not ? :(

Amen to that! Think of the Patriot Act as a downward course for picking up speed to go back up the next hill.

Right On!

"...the full power of centralized government was the very thing that the Founding Fathers sought to minimize. They knew that governments do not control things. Right on again! Now just keep the politicians and the private sector honest and don't view questioning their actions, motives and contracts as a vote for communism.

Re: A different perspective on Left vs Right.

I lived in Berlin from 85 to 88. I watched Presedent Reagan land at Templehof Airport in 87 when he came to Berlin. Not only did he provide time for the soldiers to meet him, he attended a gala dinner for military only.

I have poloroids and 35mm shots of Reagan in front of the Brandenburg gate telling Mr. Gorbachev to tear down this wall.

Flash forward to Hawaii, roughly late 90's. Mr Stephanopolous (sp?) is demandingthat the rostrum President Clinton will use to address an assembled body of Marines, Soldiers, Sailors, Coast Gaurdsmen and Airmen be turned around so he can face the audience, and present his back to the assembled servicemen and women. The CG disagree's and is vetoes. Slick willy chose to present his backsides to the troops.

THAT to me is the difference between the left and the right.

Reagan chose to confront, and face, America's enemies and made time for the people that made that possible no matter where he went.

Clinton turned his back on the enemies, and the services he commanded, and instead fawned over the party elite instead, who were obviously much more important.

The Left despises the military. It is one of the vehicles that keeps America preeminent. The Left cannont exert the kind of control it wants when all American apparati are working in fine tune.

For the left to accomplish it's goals, America has to be brought down to the lowest common denominator in all regards.

For all of that, the Left has been doing a bang up job.
