1985 120 timing at idle

can any one tell me what the timing should be at idle on a 1985 120 the clymers book tells for a 88 or newer but nothing for a 85 ir runs rough and dies on the hose if it is timed less than 4 degrees before tdc but a 4 degrees it idels at 2200 rpms on the hose

You are supposed to set the timing with the engine in gear in the water or with a test prop in a tank.

My book shows 22 degrees @ " Full Throttle BTDC" and No advance at IDLE.

Do full throttle the engine on muffs. Make sure you have it on the trailer in the water and check the rpms. You might need a test prop.

Timing is only set at WOT, not idle. Get the timing right @ WOT and don't worry about idle timing. Idle RPM is set with motor in the water and in gear ... set it ~ 600 to 650. You can't accurately set idle RPM out of water, but 2200 RPM is way too high (should be in the range of 1000 to 1200 max on the muffs).
