complained yesterday about the problems with the forum, and the store. my part is at the bottom

i'm sorry for the general experience,.

and i completely agree with the forums being screwed up,.

on the plus side,.

the call has been made to ditch bbboard,. and move once again,.
i'm almost done with the converter,. and hope to get to the testing
phase within the next week or so.

at best,. the conversion from ubb to bbboard could be described as a
disaster.

i did what i could to get it as functional as i could.,.
i've gone through 3 different phases of redoing the search,. but in the
end was pulled off to work on other projects,. until we made a decision
on it.

we'd had the impression that bbboard was bigger and better than it was,.
but it wound up spewing errors just to install it.

2 perfect examples, of the shoddy programming is:

1.
a server load of < 1 is pretty normal for us.
the first day we made bbboard public,. we hit 35!

2.
the bbboard import tool ran for 2 days, pegging the cpu load on the
server, causing problems for other apps using some of the resources,.
and only making it slightly past half way.

i wrote my own converter,. which imported everything in 12 minutes,. and
the cpu load never jumped above normal.

we should have bailed at that,. but kept on truckin,. (not my call)

this time around the guidelines are totally different,. and the primary
goal is to improve the user experience.

a forum that you can't realistically search for anything is,. bordering
on useless.

this next go around,. we've picked one of the 2 biggest forums out there,.
(them being,. phpBB and vbulletin)

we opted to go with vbulletin,. searching around the net,. i found a
couple vbulletin sites, that were as large as iboats,. if not larger,.
and (big surprise) they worked.
search worked,. etc.

if there's something i can do to help you with bbboard in the meantime,.
i'd be more than happy to.

but like i said,. it's a dead man walking,. and it might be better to
just stick it out until we get it switched.

let me know what's going on,..

as for the iboats store,.
please give me a description of any problem you're having,.
i'm one of the mall developers, and if there's something wrong,. or that
isn't consistent,. or clear,. we need to get it fixed IMMEDIATELY.
any feedback is helpful,. and does not fall on deaf ears.

Re: email from ryan, interesting

my responce to Ryan

ryan,

thanks for the update. like i said took 15 minutes to order a starter
solenoid. 1st searched Johnson solenoid, and got some crap. finally just
solenoid got me there, then the responce time was horrible from page to
page.

i know you 've been the saving grace of the forum, and we appreciate all you
have done, trying to make this system work. i'm sure the conversion wasn't
cheap, and i hope I Boats, goes back to try to recoup some of the cost from
bbboard.

i've sent them several emails about the forum, and told them bluntly if
it was and example of their work, they don't need to be in the business.
thanks, Bo

Just gotta keep the ol' gal chugging away til the shiney new replacement arrives. As long as she floats, we're okay. Keep on keeping on. :)

Tash

Have you tried the iboats part finder? It works good for me for looking up a specific engine part and is easy to use...But if you were after a general selenoid, then I see your point...On a side note, I emailed iboats a couple of days ago about an engine I was interested in buying. Never heard nothing, but I found one today anyway...

We've (the Mods) have gotten access to the new site to "play around". I know it's just in the "building" stage but the speed is really great even with all the new "bells and whistles" we'll have to play with. Hope everybody can just be patient a little while longer till Ryan and his band of IT's get it ready to go. I think this time Admin has got their self a real "class act".

Is there a commitment to recover all of the old posts? That is a boaters gold mine and it would be a crime to loose it.

That's what I was going to say. I have been to site forums that are so graphics intensive that I am forced to give up after waiting forever for anything to come up. I do okay on Vbulletin sites however...Some year dsl will be available in my immediate area. It's available a mile or so down the road from me either direction, I just live in a hole, which makes no sense. I could go cable, but I don't want anything to do with our local cable company, they have forgotten more about raising prices than I'll ever know...

That would be even more hilarious if it wasn't so painfully true! :|

Couple of buddies of mine in the "sticks" have got satellite internet. They say it works pretty good. Not as fast as cable but a close second place and.......it is available anywhere with a clear view to the sat.

Jason - I have the same problem (live in the styx & too far away from central office to get DSL). Dial-up wouldn't even work - too much noise on the phone line due to street lights of all things. Too many trees around for satellite to be reliable enough. Had to just bend over, grease up & get the cable. At least it works (most of the time, anyway).

Guy's my fishing site uses vbulletin and the webmaster could not say enough good things about it when I asked him. They just upgraded versions two weeks ago and there were only a handful of minor glitches.

As for the dial up guys, i feel for ya. reality is, to keep sites free they have to advertise, which adds pictures, which slows up load times. A new forum is not going to change that reality.

Cable can be pricey but keep in mind A lot of that is the aquasition fees charged by networks local municipality fees etc.Right now Espen is trying to leverage TW to carry more of their services by carrying some of the local college games only on the ESPN services not carried by local cable.Cable has 3 or more ESPN services and ESPN is moving the games outside of those services just to force more services on cable and us.I have dish too so I get most of the games anyway.
