That rotten ghost is still there!! It no longer says anything about dragons. Now it just snickers, like "heh heh heh".

Go to start>run and type msconfig. On the startup tab, click on Deselect All and reboot. This will stop programs from loading at startup. Some, like AntiVirus mt be they aand not start. The thing to do is see if this stops the problem. If it does, then go back into msconfig and select a few at a time until you find out which one is causing the problem.

Also go to Start>all programs>startup. Right mouse click anything in there and delete it. Your programs will not be affected by this.

YES!! I did the disable all and rebooted.

Now at least the sound has come back to aol. It will take a while to see if the other symptoms are gone, too. Then I will selectively enable 'til the problem reappears.

FYI... I keep getting a pop-up that AVG "FREE" is no longer supported after Jan. 15th. They will upgrade you for $29.

Anyone else getting that?

Got that one on my mom's puter. Deleted AVG "Free" went to their website, and reinstalled the "New" version. There is a new version of the free stuff. The old version will no longer be supported.

Did you install anything, anything at all? Like a screen saver or a game off the internet?
If you go into control panel>add/remove programs, do you see anything new? Anytool bar programs in there?
I take it your running XP? Is it home or professional?
If you go back into msconfig, is everything still unchecked?

Well, here it is almost February.

The conehead/geek saved my docs (none downloaded), formatted "C", reloaded WXP from a different set of disks, reloaded my wireless comm from a fresh disk, loaded Wordperfect from a fresh disk, and gave it back to me. There is nothing in my 'puter that was downloaded, including old Emails.

I reloaded my drivers for the printer and scanner, software for my camera and scanner, and AOL9.0.

Everything that had gone away is now back, but:

The evil one is still there. At random times I get:
* creaking door
* loud crash
* meow
* "heh, heh, heh"

AAACCKK!!! See!!:% There he goes again!:'(

Any more ideas, gents?? Could this have something to do with the sounds utility in WXP??

A creaking door is usually associated with instant messaging, a buddy signs on, and a door closing when someone logs off of IM,

Have a look here: Aol Sounds
See if the sound files for the different events sound familiar. You can replace any of the sounds too. Another option is to kill the AIM process and see if you still hear the clips.

I am going to try exiting aol when I am not actually using it and see what happens.
