I just got a 1965 Evinrude 9.5 (serial #E14623, model #9522c) at an estate sale and it looks mint. The lady said their kids used only one year and they put it in the basement. The thing looks new inside and out.
I checked the gear lube, cleaned the plugs, put it in a 55 gal. drum and it runs great. However, I had it on a high idle and when I removed the shroud to look for fuel or water leaks the rpm's picked up. It slowed down with the shroud on, but still idled nicely.
I about went blind the other night reading 50 pages of past posts here about the 9.5 and ran across talk of a problem with exhaust leaks affecting rpm. I looked in this motor and it is super clean with no tell tale stains or oil spots.
Does this rpm change indicate a problem, or did they run this way when new? Could it have been sucking exhaust from the confines of the drum? Would you recommend I change the water pump impeller (it put out plenty of water) just do to age and not running time?
This thing is a virgin and I would hate to tear it apart for a problem that doesn't exist, but I don't want to blow it up because I didn't cure a potetial problem.
