Mystery Part ??

while winterizing my engine ( 1976 70 hp Johnson ) I found this laying in the cowling,
anyone have a clue what it is?
it's about 1 1/4" long
7/16 diameter 1/4" hole on one end
pointed on the other end
it's soft rubber like fuel/vacuum hose

looks like the pull off a venitian blind, or suppository. i really ain't gotta clue.

Looks like its one of the rubber guides (for lack of a better term) that aligns and cushions the two halves the lower cowl. Should be one in front and one in back.

Should also mention there is a total of four (two on each side).

I look that thing over, didn't see where it could have come from,
also my engine is green the paint on this thing looks like evinrude gray ?
haven't look through my parts book yet...might have been there for years,
I found it because I dropped a bolt down there, *hammer

It looks like the rubber end of a compression tester gauge. The guy before may have tried several fittings...then forgot about them??

That's a rubber plug used to cover a nipple when the powerhead is being painted to keep paint off of & out of the nipple. If the powerhead was built and painted and then shipped, the rebuilder leaves the plugs on to keep the nipple protected from dirt, dust etc during shipping. Sometimes a rebuilder will tape up the nipple for painting and then put a plug on for shipping.

Different manufactures and remauufacturers use different ones. That one looks like the ones OMC used to use. Silver indicates that that one came from something being painted Sea Drive silver. Someone may have just used it to temporarily plug something on your motor.

At any rate, if that was covering something with a hole that big and now that nipple is open, you'd know it. If your motor is running fine, don't worry about it.

I have been pondering this thing for days, I knew it was to cover or plug something just din't know what, engine runs fine, must be that someone dropped it down there years ago.......maybe at the factory when it was new it was originaly silver/gray then it wouldn't start so it got painted green.... where have I heard that before hmm 8)
