65mph down a curvey mangrove inlet. three seconds later the boat walks side ways. and almost threw me out of it. NOT GOOD. it happens quick to. i eliminated the walking on mine but its still in the back of my head.ever see a motorcycle tank slap? think of that in your little boat. although the water is alot less painfull than cement. it could still kill ya and others.

Thanks for all of the input guys. I added smart tabs to the boat and it did help greatly, but I need more power. However, better safe than sorry so I will sell this boat and get something bigger. Even if everything worked fine with the 90, there's too many viable doubts that have been raised for me to really enjoy running the 90 without worry. I got small kids on this boat. Thanks again!

Re: 90 hp too much for my boat?

I have a 1977 glastron tri-hull. I think it's 17 feet but I never actually measured it. This question has to do with his. It it rated at 85hp and has a 85hp Mercury and tops at 31 mph. Would a 110 or 115hp be too much for it? I was thinking a 150 but I figured that would be too much. It's rated at 6 people but we usually only have 3 in it with 5 or 6 on occasion. And I've been getting around to reinforcing the transom with aluminum plating like he said earlier. I wasn't sure how to attach the aluminum though, do I run bolts through it or what? Evan

Something is not right here. Are you sure your capacity plate is correct? The 15 foot Bayliner is rated for 50 Hp. or so I think because I always see them with that HP. I think you are nearly underpowered with only 50Hp.

If you want to gamble away a few bucks, fill out the form for getting a capacity plate from your boat registering agency. I'm reasonably sure they will rate your hull for more than 50.

Hell, my 15 foot Glastron is rated for 90 and my 16 foot Glastron is rated for 115.

The rating is figured on length, width at the transom and depth of the transom. Deep Vees are rated for more power than a flat bottom or a round bottom hull. Based on the size of your hull, it should be good for a 90. And don't let them talk you out of a Force. It will bolt right up and controls and electrical are all the same. --Easy installation.

If you are interested, someplace around here there is a link to the Coast Guard page with instructions on how to figure capacity for a given hull.

The early bayliners were underpowered, but they were also underbuilt. I'm not trying to bad mouth your boat, hell mines an 86. But the 90's were when bayliners weren't very well built. I think they have come along way since then, but that does seem underpowered. What is wrong with the force engines? i've heard they were johnsons right?

no no no they are not johnsons at all. there a completely different company.back in the day force was the Budget outboard and a johnson was top of the line.

You can not really compare a Force to a Johnson....it's like comparing a Ferarri to a Ford escort !!!

Re: 90 hp too much for my boat?

I just traded my 1989 Force 85 hp for a 1992 Johnson 90 hp VRO...wow...what a change in reliability and noise.
The Force was a POS! I tried and tried and tried.....to get that thing running right but could not and fianlly gave up.
The 90 VRO makes far less noise at every speed and is a pleasure to own.
And fwiw the Force engine evolved from the Chrysler o/b line..They were the Lada/Skoda engines of the outboard world. Priced cheap to get a customer into boating but a nightmare to own!
