This motor runs great out of the water with muffs on, but put it in the water and boggs out and dies even out of gear. Idles ok but still eventually dies out.

Compression, fuel, and spark at the right time.
Without knowing anything else about your motor I'd guess your carbs are fouled and need a good cleaning.

Just got the motor back from mechanic. Carbs. just rejetted for the altitude and cleaned. New fuel, tanks, lines and filters. Compression checked and good in all 6 cylinders. Don't really trust this guy anymore, says it is probably exhaust leaking.?

Give a little more history. Did the motor run good before? Did you just move to a higher altitude?? What altitude are we talking? Did an authorized service center do the work???

some motors run great on a muffy but the wate with exhaust backpressure wont i'd start by doing my own compression test if its borderline throw the seafoam to and try again

Yes an authorized center did the work for me. The person I got the motor from says it ran just fine. It came from sea level up to where I live at 5500 feet. Will check the compression today myself. Purchased the Clymer manual for this engine so I can start doing the work myself.

Re: 1985 Johnson 150hp - Won't throttle up in the water.

BTW can anyone tell me for sure which is the #1 cylinder, the Clymer manual does not say. I am assuming that if you are looking at the motor from the back it is the top right hand cylinder, is that right r wrong?

Check your timer base to see if it is sticking. It might not be advandcing the spark when throttled up. Start with compression check Compression guage I purchased recently was $20.00 and it was the best investment knowing my engine was full of life still. It should be in the 120 range. A little less in one or more cylinders is ok, check plugs, check fuel pump and fuel lines for air leaks.

I have a 1979 140 hp evinrude and most important make sure you check spark plug wires and coil leads. Like I said spark plugs tell a lot also, if there is a shorting out. Also make sure all your ground leads that they are clean and tight. I was having major shorting out on one wire when cover was put back on and throttling up only when load was applied in water. When it ran in test tank or muffs it was fine. It was shorting out to engine cover. I replaced my 4 spark plug wires for 20 bucks and now it runs like a champ. Like i said in last thread If your compression is up to norm you will have a fuel or spark issue.

Compression readings will be lower at higher altitudes.

The important thing is that the readings are close to each other and that you are consistent in how you take them.

Compression in all 6 cylinders is between 68 and 70 PSI. A question about the timing though, the mechanic set the timing out of the water on muffs, isn't it supposed to be set while the boat is in the water?

Re: 1985 Johnson 150hp - Won't throttle up in the water.

Compression is a little low. Can you possibly check it again with a different guage??
A de-carb treatment is probably in order. Hopefully it will help.

OK, cleaned carbs. again and still did not work. Ordered parts to replace rings, leaf valves and all the goodies.

Did you do a de-carbon treatment?? That might bring your compression up. Much cheaper than a rebuild and certainly worth trying.

yup you got low compression new rings and decarb and should be on your way

What's a good product to use to de-carbon this motor with? Where can I get it, I live in a very small town and don't have alot of choices to get stuff like that. We have a NAPA, Carqwest and Wal-Mart.

NAPA sould have SEAFOAM. Do a search for Seafoamere and you'll see how some people are using it for decarb

Re: 1985 Johnson 150hp - Won't throttle up in the water.

Ran Seafoam through and no change to compression, although it does run a little better. Took it up to the lake and in neutral, manually working the throttle and making sure the bulb is pumped up tight it stays running, but still dies out with throttle lever. Gonna pull carbs off again and make sure mechanic cleaned them good (he did not do anything else right).

Carbs. are clean and passages blown out. Gonna check VRO pump pressure to carbs. tomorrow morning. Still think I am gonna replace the rings and all that good stuff for comprssion. Anybody else got any thoughts on problem at this point?
