Ok, so my 800 series stringer blew a bearing and cracked the gears. I have what I am told is a stringer 600 outdrive from a 6cyl boat with a good upper gearbox that I can buy very cheap. I am pretty sure the gearbox will fit on my 800, but will the gear ratios, shaft strength, or its overall integrity cause me problems? Any info would be appreciated. Thank You.

Upper gearcase omc 800 Stringer mount with gear ratios,,,,,21/16 = 1.31:1 with V8 - 5.7or 5.8 litre,,,,,21/17 = 1.24:1 with V8 - 5.0 litre,,,,,,and 21/20 = 1.05:1 V6 outdrive.
The 400 stringer is for 4 clyinder engines.

The V6 used an 800 drive with 21/20 gears in the upper as Reel poor pointed out.
no such animal as a 600.

ok, i didnt think there was any such thing as a 600 either, but according to thishttp://hhscott.com/evinrude/omc_stringer.htm website, there is! It states..."For 1978, a second-generation, ball-gear OMC Stringer (400/600/800-series) design with a redesigned (V4 - V6 outboard inspired, thru-hub exhaust) lower unit, which remained in production until 1985-86 and shared many upper gearcase design features of the original "Electric-shift" stringer. It is important to always specify your sterndrive's model number when locating parts."

Anyway, if its a 400, what are the possible ratios, and can I correct them with a different prop? If not, can I run the 400 upper gear case with my 800....According to the owner, this was in a v6 boat!

I never herd of a 600 either.
The 400 gear box has a different gear ratio but also has smaller shaft sizes and I believe would tear up with a 6 or 8 cylinder.

You will need to find the 800 series with the 21/20 count of teeth. with any others the performance and economy will be lost.

check around for gears... GLM repops the V6 gears.
I scored a NOS set of actual OMC V6 upper gears off ebay at one time. The guy selling them tried to back out of the deal I got 'em so cheap... but I pushed the issue luckily... they're chilling in my cellar along side my NOS 3.8 exh. manifolds.....

OK, so I guess you don't want to sell me those gears hystat? I can easily rebuild my gearcase if only I had a new set of gears. I was trying not to spend $500 on a new gear set though.
