So, the Seloc manual says to use these plugs on my 71 johnson 60 hp (60esl71c)

I did have Champion J4C's in it...anyway..The new plugs I got have no arcy thingy over the tip. The spark fires off to the sides..Never saw these type of plugs before.

Should I really be using them?

One good thing about them is, they were 1/2 long thread wise so It snugs up in my stripped (the jc4's were only 3/8") # 2 Cylander!

Thanks!

Re: Champion L76V

I would use QL77JC4's gapped at .030...(.040 for better idle) Either one is recommended, but the surface gap is best used for sustained high speed operation....

You can use either , L76V, (surface gap ) or QL77JC4 conventional gap., plugs in your motor.

Its your choice.

Like Rick said, we were posting at the same time, he's just a faster typerer. LOL

Re: Champion L76V

Thanks for the advice. I'm leaning towards the L76V's since I have a half stripped #2 Cyl and the longer thread at least snugs up unlike the jc4 in the same Cyl.

Would it be OK to leave a L76V in # 2 and use Jc4's in 1 and 3?

Or is that a no no?

Thanks!

But remember, you do not have the CD ignition in that motor anymore. If you get the L76V surface gap plugs to run right, you must have been saying your prayers. The QL77JC4 or L77JC4 are 1/2" reach (long), same as the L76V. The Q means it has an inductive suppressor built in. Gap them at .030 for your battery ignition conversion.

I'd never run a motor with half surface gap and half conventional gap plugs.

If your head / plug hole is stripped .

I'd install a helicoil , and run the 77JC4's.

The suppressor mentioned, is to prevent interference with electronics.

Hmm..maybe that's why it wont idle after I put the SeaFoam in, because of the L76V's. I'll pick up a new set of the 77JC4's after work and give it another go.

Do you recommend the Q or Non Q JC4's?

Thanks!

Welp, took out the new L76V's and put in 3 new 77JC4's and she's purring like a kitten again! (Well..a kitten with a hairball and a throat condition)

So guess she doesn't like those surface plugs!

Thanks for the suggestions!

Mercs like em', but the OMC's like a steady diet of electrode type plugs in most cases..

Yep !

My old 50 hp. merc, loved those surface gap plugs.

Only motor I ever had , that used them.
