I have read that companies can detect everywhere you have been on the internet.
Is there anyway to detect if a corporation has one of those spy programs on your computer at work.

Can they monitor your actions on the Web?, certainly. Who says they have to use a program installed on your computer to record log files of sites visited, or keystroke loggers. It can be done at the network level, totally transparent to you.

yup, you have no control...

you have to go through their router to get anywhere, they can capture everything right there.

your using their computers and bandwidth, and they have every right to see what's going on. don't have to like it though!

My company "network admin" (term used VERY loosely) just sits around all day reading everybodies emails. Through the company firewall, he also has the abilty to see every website you visited and when. Welcome to 1984.

-JustMrWill

Re: corp spy

JustMrWill,

As a network admin for several years before retirement, I was one who read everybody’s emails. There were many reasons, but voyeurism wasn't one of them. Actually, with 13,000 mailboxes, I couldn't possibly read many. Working with our internal security, we located those who were active pornographers, those who were compromising corporate intellectual assets, and in two cases turned over to the local prosecutor, two actively soliciting p_e_d_o_p_h_i_l_e_s.

Edit: I had to add the underscores because the auto-"poof" got me without them.

Mostly what we did was examine mailboxes when the user complained that they were out of space and he/she needed more. Usually their space was taken up by a gazillion copies of “Dancing Baby” or other non-corporate trash.

It might appear unseamly, but sometimes there are reasons. After all, the company owns the network, not you.

I can't believe that so many companies allow their employees on the internet. Certainly not without some sort of site approving software installed.

How much time are people spending just surfing around?
An hour a week? per day? 2 hours per day?

Simply does not make sense to let an asset you are paying for (the employee) go on break for as long as they want, whenever they want.

I can't even go to the bathroom without permission.
I can get access to the corporate INTRA-net site, when I'm off the clock.

Just think of all the millions of hours of non-productive time the employer is paying for.

Re: corp spy

I have intranet and internet access at my desktop, if I don't want them to know what I am doing on the internet, I just use the "dirty net" which is on the world wide side of the firewall. there are some sites blocked, but mostly doesn't effect me, I can still get to IBoats! they allow SOME personal internet and email usage, as long as it does not interfere with work. keep your inbox, sent items, and trash box clean and they don't watch much, get a virus and they'll be all over you.
