I have been following these boards for the past year. Last October I just couldn't take it anymore and was able to work a deal for this 1987 SS. I had an 85 mariner about 10 years ago and have missed the ease of a tin boat since getting rid of it. I bought this boat with a suspect motor. Owner didn't know what was wrong with just that it would run on plane. The floor is soft and will need replaced. The transom seems fine although I will most likely end up replacing it anyways. Boat is an 87 and motor is an 86. I was hoping to work on it this winter/spring but the winter was not kind to us in PA and we ended up with snow cover pretty much from December until April. I was able to check the motor out and found one bad coil. Cleaned everything up and replaced the coil and it runs great. Was able to get a test run in last weekend. I was surprised. It was just me and the boys but the boat topped out at 32 mph with the 60. Im interested to see what it does with several people. My last 18 mariner did 43 with a 90 and two adults on board and would run low-mid 30s with 5 people. Now that it is May and my twins are obsessed with wanting to take the boat out I may just run as is until August and tear it apart September/October before it gets cold. Looking forward to getting information to help with the rebuild whenever that is.
