The Mariner I bought has a Yamaha 115 for power. I want to fish power restricted reservoirs by me so I picked up a little 9.9 Merc off of CL. It seems to run fine but the fastest I can get is about 5mph. Is that the best I can expect given the weight of the whole setup?

Huh - i get 5.5mph with my 7.5hp thought you would have at least seen 6mph.

Yea that's about as good as it gets unless you were to pick up a little 14' or 16' tinny. Then the Merc would push you 15 to 20mph.

I would have thought a tad faster. My 1971 Evinrude 6hp pushed my 16ft Gheenoe skiff at about 6mph. But it pushed my buddy's 17ft Saltwater fiberglass boat at about 7.5mph...

Look around to see if you can find a different pitch prop for it. I know they are available for the Evinrude/Johnsons.

i know it not the same boat but my 21 chief goes 5 mph in the ocean with my 15hp (2001) 2 stroke johnson, that is with a 4 blade shallow pitch prop running 4,500 rpms. A 25hp 1995 johonson with factory prop only pushed the boat 7 mph in the ocean. These are gps speeds in decent ocean conditions. I would anticipate 1 mph better in a lake at sea level.
I would really like to see one of those 9.9 bigfoots in use to see how well they push a boat, most boats at the coast have a 8-10 hp high thrust kicker and people say they push the big boats along nicely. Never seen one first hand push a boat other than trolling.
