1987 18' mariner CC. powerd by 1989 johnson 110hp

New restore project. I have been reading threads on floor replacement and Mariner rebuilds for the last few weeks.
So far I have stripped the interior down to the metal and now I need to powerwash the bare deck.
This is what I want to do:
Build removable casting platform around a cooler as a seat in rear of boat to cover gas tank, battries, storage ect. And possiably extend front deck 8"-12" for more storage.

I plan to water test, gluvit, sand barnical deposits off bottom (two weeks is all it took to get fouled up) sand and repaint exterior sides. Add swim noodles for floation. $2.38 ea. for monster noodles Ace online 200lb rateing how many?? 18.
Of course all on a tight budget!

Boat is run in salt and brackish water.

My questions:

1. Rivit or screw stringers back to bottom(forgot the name of part) using S.S. screws.
2. Rivit or screw decking down.
3. If rivit what kind? Alum. pop?
4. Paint bottom of boat? How to flip boat with three adults? and back.
5. Paint interior or new carpet on side walls? Will carpet keep sound down?
6 I guess most important can I keep the side panals and kick plates out for more room. or dose it a struictural support? With the CC in you can barley get from front to back. Removed gives me 4" on each side of CC much better.

7. Seal ply. wood with epoxy or just several coats of exterior paint with caution to edges.
8. Seal edges of deck when layed down(ive herd no but checking anyway)

I'm sure I'll have more to follow and thanks for all your help.

Pictures to come soon.

Sounds like a great boat! I can suggest for #7 to give it a coat or 2 of West System epoxy found right here on iboats. I just replaced my transom and found that it coated extremely easily and resulted in a solid hard coat that repellent water nicely. Its about $50 for a quart... more then enough to give all the wood in your entire boat a coat or 2!

Hi brian,

Nice project you have there... if you copy the image tag associated with the picture in photo bucket and then paste the tag into your response, we will be able to see a full sized picture. Hope this helps.

Flipping boat - presuming you have removed the cc and the motor - and other bits - I just laid down a couple of industrial blankets to prevent scratching, rolled up on side and then gently and slowly lowered on to my 3 dollies with old car tires that were being chucked at a tire shop. Should be quite straight forward.

Rivit or screw deck down --- either will work. It seams to be a personnel, pref. Here. Either way, just watch the length of the screws to make sure you don't penetrate the hull and that the rivets are long enough to grab.

Nice boat you have there. Seems a bit young for that kind of rehash but if it needs it, it needs it. Check out my resto hread in my signature. I went through all the same decisions / tasks your going through. I got a 2 gallon kit of epoxy from US compositsand found that to be the best value. Some like to "candy" the plywood with multiple coats but I found that after 1 good coat the wood is sealed and wouldn't take any more. I did hit the edges everytime I had a wet brush going but 2 coats max on the surfaces is all this boy suggests any more and your only building thickness and what does that do for you? For the deck I used 3/4 and 1" x 3/16 pop rivits and countersunk so the heads were flush. You get more grip range out of those than advertised.

Welcome to the madness.
