I finally found a project Starcraft. The CL ad is already gone; here's the text;

1966 Starcraft Nassau & trailer - $500 (Rock Hill, SC)

1966 Starcraft Nassau 16 foot with original trailer. Mercury 500 Kiekhaefer. Last in the water in 2010 and motor functioned properly. Have more photos if requested.

The pics

The plate said 1966 Nassau 16 ft. Winch post area looked a little shaky since I had to tow it about 200 miles, but doable. $500 asking, but I was sure I could negotiate lower. I emailed and asked for more pics and title/bill of sale info.

more to come

Last of pics;

This thing is original right down to the air in the tires except for the sound system. Trailer probably needed tires and bearings to move it home. not really a worry. The ad said it was last used in 2010. I don't think so and the registration expired in 2008 or 2003, hard to tell even blowing up the pics. But I was feeling good, owner seemed like he was willing to work on the price.

I emailed once more asking for paperwork clarification.

Re: I found my Starcraft Finale

As I waited for the owner to respond I was day dreaming about doing the transom and decking cause I'm sure it needed to be done. New dash, the dreaded foam removal and rebuilding the trailer. Oh, Ive got mail:

"Thank you for your interest and questions. Your questions prodded me to research things alittle.
As for any and all non commercial trailers, they are sold only with a bill or sale or if they are home made then with a notarized statement of manufacture. Not simply because I work in a law firm, but because I have sold RV utility trailers, motorcycle trailers even horse trailers in South Carolina since the 1980's so I know this first hand experience.

The boat was titled and registared in South Carolina and I found out today at the DMV web site that it cost $35 to file for a lost title.

Georgia, like several other states, if the vehicle is over 10 years old etc you can apply at the Georgia DMV for and get a title with a bill of sale.

I looked today and see on eBay and acouple boat web sites that the windshield alone for this boat is selling between $500 and $700 . Because it is alum hull etc it is a sought after boat. The motor it's self is some what of a hot item it appears. I had no idea.

Because I have the total package, boat, trailer and motor it is in my best interest to simply pay the $35 lost title fee at the DMV which will increase the selling value. So with this new knowledge I have aquired seeking answers for you, I am going to remove the post on craigslist.

Again thank you for your interest and the thought provoking questions."

WHAT!!!!!!!!!!!! I am bummed, to say the least.

I guess I should have hit him with a price, bought it sight unseen and PayPaled him. I guess it wasn't meant to be

Good thing this is a family site. The air was blue:eek:

What a bummer. What he doesn't know is the parts seperatly are worth more than the whole package, he would have to part it out.

I laughed at that. I forgot to say that he replied to my first email from work. My apologies, but he's a lawyer - I shoulda kept my mouth shut. I'll be watching CL and Ebay to see if it shows up and if it sells, just out of curiosity.

At least I learned how to post pics using Woodonglass' perfect tutorial.

If you want to go sight unseen, look at this one http://richmond.craigslist.org/boa/2492385423.html. It's in Richmond VA. I'd be willing to drag it back to Knoxville for you. I'll be driving home Saturday. PM me if you're interested. I'm in Richmond visiting, got bored (my SC project is at home - Knoxville) and was crusisng CL. I think the neighbors and the admiral would die if I bought another boat. Actually, I think , I'd die -- a slow and horrible death.

GF, I'll give you a tour of the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall if you will tow that 18 footer up to me in Philly! Fix you up a nice dinner of brown trout also.

Wow, that guy is a real moron. What's he think he's going to get for a frosted out windshield and an ancient Mercury?

I got $2100 for this one (restored, water-ready) and was GLAD OF IT! What a doof!!!

Thanks for the great offer Gun Dog but that's the wrong direction. I'm bored to tears here and it's taking all I can do to keep from going to look at it. I've got an 18 SS O/B I just bought. It's sound but I don't like the trailer and it needs an interior. Jeez, I'm doing it already...all the reasons I should buy another. Maybe I should staart drinking at 10 am to protect myself.

I'll find it Jason. I'm bottom feeding like you and not really don't a size limitation. 15-19 ft is ok as long as the hull not too trashed. This one seemed to have a decent hull, never got a chance to see what the Merc was like. I know the trailer needed work. The thing that rang my chimes was the originality. The gas tank, rusted as it was, was original. Maybe even still has the gas/oil mix from the first float. Only add-on was the radio and maybe the top. As the French say - CARP.

It's out there somewhere calling my name - better clean the wax out of my ears.

I sent him one more email to let him know he missed a chance to get rid of it:

"I'm sorry I asked the wrong questions. I was ready to come on up and put $100 bills in your palm."

He sent me another email a few minutes ago:

"It is certainly worth the $500. I can have notarized Bill of sale for you prepared here in the office. If you want it as is without me going to the DMV and cleaning it up etc, then I will sell it.
Please feel free to call me on my cell # XXX-XXX-XXXX or you can call me at work XXX-XXX-XXXX and ask for James. I go by my first name at work.
Your general questions provoked me to research the subject and I am thankful to you for that."

Ain't no way that is worth $500 as it sits. Does he think a title that cost $35 is going to triple, quadruple or more the value. In fact I wonder if he is the owner and if he can get a title. I might just hit him with a number and see what happens. It isn't going to be a real big number. Thinking - I smell smoke!

BTW - Nice one EZ

Re: I found my Starcraft Finale

Yikess thought you had other plans for the steering wheel. LOL Please note I have rebuilt glass and just finished a 16 SS starcraft . It was in very bad condition. however you might send the LAWYER ( they lie when there lips move ) a thank you note. That boat Had a ton of work to rebuild antdthe motor Questionable. Better off looking around your area for a fixable boat. One that wont break the bank. Probably the Lawyer wants a 1/3 increse thats there main cost for things they do. Good luck Pugetsound.

Re: I found my Starcraft Finale

Thanks PS. It's a total rebuild for sure, but that's about what I was looking for. Maybe a little better shape but it's ok, just what a lot of the SC projects are here. It's one that I can handle by myself launching and so on. At least If I tired of it, I could sell the windshield for $300-700. And the Merc 500 has to be priceless. And N1265 wants a wheel like that, kaching! I should charge him an assessment fee since he didn't know how valuable the rig is. $500 sounds fair.
