I'm interested in buying a StarCraft I've discovered at a local industrial equipment seller. Apparently one of his regular commercial clients had it and along with other stuff asked for help in selling it. I know very little about boats, but have wanted to jump in and buy one. This just caught my eye and the more I've learned about StarCraft through this website the more interested I am. The problem is, he knows very little about the boat. So, I thought I would see if you guys could help. Any help in identifying the model and year is appreciated. It's thought to be a 1988 yr model but haven't seen anything to confirm that. I'm uploading pics...

One of the pics I posted was of the ID tag. You may not be able to pick up the numbers on it. They are: 63-T-9338. Did I correctly read that the first numbers indicate the year of manufacture?

I know very little about the fiberglass boats, but I would think the 1960's would be a good guess. So, maybe 1963....

Hopefully, someone will chime in that knows more than I. It's a beautiful boat.

I just looked closer at the tag and made out enough letters to see it's a ranger. Now time to do some new research. Any help is appreciated

I was going to ask if the tag showed the model. Ranger and back then the first 2 digits of the serial number was the year. My tag starts 66 and it is a 1966 model Nassau.

Take a look at our brochures, you might see some of what she looked like when new. Ranger is in the 1963 brochure, just not such a good pic, and there is a minimal spec sheet. I hope they aren't asking a lot for her - Shes old enough to be your older brother,. LOL Check her out as best you can, transom and floor go bad first.

Your reply and assistance is much appreciated. I wouldn't consider anything like this without the assistance that appears available here. Is the fiberglass hull a concern? With this age? The person selling thought it was built in 1988. Small difference, lol. I read the three entries on what to check when buying. I'll look at that again He's asking 1000, I was thinking 800. Thoughts?

Great looking boat, but saying you are not that familiar with them, and for myself having read through a ton of the fiberglass forums on the boat restoration side of the forum I would have to advise you to look through a few of them to see what the work involved is with glassers. Not trying to scare you off if your are up to learning new things. But any fiberglass boat from the 60's has to have a few "repairs needed" by now unless it was kept in a show room. Of course for the right price you may get a few years just fine on the water before really getting into her for a restore!

I will do that. It's honestly the first boat I've considered buying and having to temper some emotions. I greatly appreciate your comments and insight.

Being an early 60s boat, it's likely to have hollow, fiberglass stringers. So as long as they are still well adhered to the hull, no need to replace them. Compared to wooden stringers, no replacing them is big positive.

Thanks for pointing that out. Something to check before purchase I assume. If so, easiest way to accomplish?

Does the seller have the title for the boat and trailer?
Does the motor run?
Are there any soft spots in the floor?
Is the wood in the transom rotting?
