I'm considering the purchase of a 1977 Sea Ray Hard Top 220 Overnighter. Aesthetically the boat in in very good condition.

It comes with a 350 mercruiser. My questions are with the integrity of the fiberglas boats from this era and also mechanically in regards to the power package. How relaible are the older outdrives and how hard is it to get parts? How difficult is it possible to replace the drive with a newer model or do you have to replace the entire engine/outdrive system? What about the hydraulics? Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks!!

I am restoring this very same boat but I have the Ford 351 in a Mercruiser 233 package. I've found a lot of the parts online but I have had to fabricate things like the hatch to the cabin. I am redesigning the interior with some modern seats and more deck space for fishing. I've been working on this for almost 2 years now and have never seen it in the water so it was cool to see the picture you posted.

This is all good news to me. I just bought a 1977 Sea Ray SRV220 Hardtop Cuddy. I went by the photos only and conversations with the seller. The boat is totally original and looks like new as it was owned by only one owner and I'm very excited about getting it. It also will be coming with all the original manuals. I have pictures, but will post when I have time to take my own shots. Any suggestions would be great.

The Last four numbers of my HIN are 1176 so, is my boat a 1976 Sea Ray hardtop or a 1977 as the seller stated?

Hello David, What kind of manuals are you looking for? My boat came with all the manuals that the original owner was given when he purchased the boat new in 1977.....There was no manual on what switches do what on the console other than the tags on each switch.

I just (July 3, 2012) bought a blue, 1977 Sea Ray 220 Overnighter, too. [See attached.] Thanks for posting you experiences! I am reading with great interest as I get ready to update mine. The name is "Shudnabotther", and that is one of the first things that will change! Sea Ray.jpgSea Ray.jpg

I just bought a '77 22ft SeaRay. it isnt the hard top but a good solid boat. The previous owner stated he thought the oil had water in it. it is going to the shop Thursday to see how bad it is. Worst case is I have to buy a engine.

i'd have to say that the only thing i don't like about these old sea rays, is the 'bump' transom they use...i'm redoing my transom now, and i'm going to put in a full thickness/width transom....especially since most of these boats have full width swim platforms hanging off the back of the transom
