Should I buy this damaged Sea Nymph? (I bought it...and now sold it!)

Drove an hour to take a look at a 16.5' Sea Nymph today. It's almost identical to my Starcraft SS.

Problem is that the boat has 4 holes(about 2" in diameter) drilled into the hull on the starboard side...2 of which are below the waterline.. The original owner(not the seller) built some oddball live well system...that allows water to go through the hull into a live well ....and then back out of the boat.

There is also a 2" hole cut to the right of the bilge drain hole on the back of the boat...God only knows what the hell it's for. That hole is also below the waterline.

On the positive side, it has a bunk trailer (that I'd like to steal for my SS)...a spare prop that fits my 75hp. The foam is dry and the floor/carpet is new.

I had planned on buying it.....and flipping it, but I didn't expect to find the holes. The seller thought that they were normal for a boat with a live well. He apologized about the holes...said he thought that they were normal. He lowered the price to $200....but I needed a day to mull it over.

Here's what it looks like

Re: Should I buy this damaged Sea Nymph?

I don't have a pic of the hole near the bulge drain hole, but it's similar to the holes shown.

Anyone know a cheap/easy...and somewhat attractive way to patch all of these holes?

The last piece of the puzzle is the LACK of trailer registration. Seller has prev owners contact info...and the trailer license plate number. The boat and trailer were last registered in 2006.

Anyone know if I can get a registration for trailer with just a bill of sale(from last registered owner NOT the current seller)....but without the actual registration documents?

Re: Should I buy this damaged Sea Nymph?

Update: got in touch with original owner earlier today. If I have any problems registering trailer...the orig owner is around should I need something from him.

So unless someone talks me out of it....I'm going to buy the boat for $200. It was going to cost me $110 to replace the tires on my current trailer, so instead...I'm going to steal the Nymph trailer for my boat.

I'm going to put the Nymph in my front yard...and sell it. I may sell the boat and trailer separately in hopes to make more money that way.

The transom seems to be thicker than my SS. Anyone know what the hp rating is for a 1982 Sea Nymph 16.5' ?

Here is the homemade livewell/seat combo. A hose is supposed to go to thru hull fitting near bilge drain hole....water gets sucked up from there into livewell. Then water overflow into a hose that exits the side of the boat.

If I get some hose and hook this system up...I won't have to bother trying patch the holes in the hull. The seller gave me 2-3 thru hull fittings and some misc stuff to help with hooking it up.

The livewell is not where it's supposed to be mounted in the pic

Hey BAII - I say swap trailers, rig the livewell, pressure wash it and flip it. Might even make some extra $$.

Nice find. I'd be tempted to do a quickie restore on it, find a motor, and sell it at the height of the buying season for a couple grand.

Re: Should I buy this damaged Sea Nymph? (I bought it!)

I'm def gonna clean it up a bit. Not sure how much money I can sink into it though....don't want to spend money on a motor and then NOT find a buyer.

I'm going to make a set of console panels and install the steering rack/wheel....try to scrape the old carpet/adhesive from the sides cause I don't have carpet to cover those areas.

I'll hoping to get $300-400 for the boat(with a simple cleaning and no additional cash investment in it) and $300 for my tandem trailer (I'm keeping the Nymph trailer for my SS).

Absolute worse case scenario, I'll strip the boat of the consoles/windows and all cleats, moldings....and anything I can sell......and scrap the hull for cash. Anyone have any idea what this hull weighs? And what the scrap value of aluminum is?

Re: Should I buy this damaged Sea Nymph? (I bought it!)

Plate says 100hp max.

Talked to seller...he got the carpet at Lowes. Looks I should be able to finish the carpeting for about $30-40 bucks. I'll def be able to raise my asking price if boat is fully carpeted.
I could probably compete the livewell system for about $60 bucks(pump, hoses, fittings).

Going to swap trailers tomorrow(hopefully). Anyone know any tricks to getting a boat off a trailer? I saw a thread recently about this subject, but can't find it now.

Tie the boat to a tree and drive out from under it. Oh wait, that's for unloading a donor glasser. :D

If you have some old tires, you can use the same method. Just use a more care and much slower.

I've seen a write-up here with blocking the back of the boat and raising/lowering the tongue jack to lift the hull and then slowly work the trailer forward until you can add blocking toward the bow.

I might have some tires I can use.

Do I tie boat to a tree.....put tires under the transom......and slowly drive the trailer out from under the boat?

How do I get the other trailer back under the boat(now sitting on tires)? Btw....this boat has no motor, so it shouldn't be awfully heavy.

Re: Should I buy this damaged Sea Nymph? (I bought it!)

Now you want details. :) Tie to the tree and put tires under the rear and move the tires around as the stern starts to clear the trailer. Before the bow clears the trailer block the bow as high as you can. Move all the old (new) stuff out of the way and move the new (old) trailer under the bow. Crank the jack up to drop the rear of the trailer, hook up the winch and crank her on. Some water on the bunks might help grease the ways, so to speak. That should do it, BA.

One thing to be careful of - when cranking the SN onto the old trailer watch out for the weight of the boat lifting the tongue suddenly. It's pivoting on the wheels, hook up the hitch as soon as you can. Is this all as clear as mud?

Of course, it had to snow here last night....making the yard slick....that should make it interesting.

Fortunately, I can suspend my SS from the rafters of my barn(garage)....so loading/unloading that boat will be easy.

There is one other way. Get 6 big buys and a couple of cases of beer. But that's too easy. :D

It's just going to be me and (2) 16yr olds. And they have an aversion to work....so I'm going to have to crack the whip and get them motivated.

I built a contraption once to out of scrap wood, worked well with one man and a very heavy 21' fiberglass with a massive inboard engine, wish i took pictures. I can explain if needed. However it took a while.

Now I just trailer to the closest pond, swap trailers that way, slap a little kicker on or just use rope and get wet if needed.

Unfortunately the new(to me) boat isn't a floater yet. I'd launch it and end up sinking it while swapping trailers.
