16' Scout

Just purchased a 2000 Scout 16" CC, On the console there is a 3 position switch for the live well that says recirculation, empty, Auto. This may sound foolish but how can I tell if it is operating properly? It works a cable and I really can not tell what is happening in the well no matter the position of the switch.
