I have to replace my outboard on my 16' MFG. Rated to 70HP have a 65HP Johnson on now. I'm on a tight budget and thinking of going with a Johnson 35hp w/controls. The boat is used for fishing/cruising but mostly fishing. Will this be enough get up and go for larger rivers and bays? I was over 30mph with the bad motor. I don't need to be a speed demon but I also want to know the boat will move.

Thanks. I'm having a hard time finding a good motor in my price range between 50-70Hp. I don't want to short change myself on HP but at the same time I can't really spend a fortune as I've already spent way too much on the boat.

This time of year prices are higher, generally. You should be able to find a 70hp for $500 to $1000 in fall or winter if you are patient. I was fortunate to snag a 90HP Johnson for my 19' starcraft project for $800 over last winter. I knew the guy, which helped, but he picked up the motor before repairs for $400. His current 115HP he got with a bad leg for like $300 and bought a used lower unit and got into that for less than $800 total. so it can be done. Beautiful performing motor. The 90 I have is too.
