Well I finally was able to deduce how the steering assembly comes apart without damaging the logo insert. First, apply a liberal amount of PB Blaster to the shaft and anywhere the pieces are to be broken down.
There is a wire retaining ring that fits in a groove between the steering wheel's center cup and the logo plate that can be picked out with a small sharp object. Once this ring is out, the insert will come out with a little coaxing. Under the dished shaped logo plate, the nut that holds the steering wheel to the steering shaft can be removed. The steering shaft has a tapered fit onto the steering wheel. After removing the steering wheel, the cable pully can be removed from the other end of the shaft by removing the large nut that holds the pully onto the shaft.
The retaining pins going through the shaft at each end can be driven out with a drift pin. There are two plastic material type bushings at each end of the aluminum housing that act as bearing bushings between the shaft and the housing. I do not recomend removing them if not necessary.
The shaft can be driven out of the housing by solidly supporting the pully end of the housing close to where the shaft penetrates the housing. Use a small pipe or deep well socket that will go over the threads on the steering wheel end of the shaft and rest solidly on the sholder of the shaft at the bottom of the threads. Be carefull not to damage the threads, shaft and housing, slowly drive the shaft down through the housing by hitting the socket with a hammer.
The shaft in my steering unit was severely corroded and was very difficult to get out. The plastic insert bushings were damaged by the shaft removal and will need to be replaced with an appropriate material.
My steering wheel will need alot of work to bring it back to life. That will be a separate project.
So there's my experience with the steering unit.
More to follow.
