Re: Looking for a 22′ -24′ Cobalt
I have a 1987 Cobalt 23BR with a 7.4L Mercruiser Magnum and an AlphaOne Sterndrive 1.30 ratio. I purchased it in 2007. I was told before I purchased the boat that the Sterndrive was a poor match, but in time I learned that out of the hole, I just had to be somewhat gentle the first 5 seconds; then as it got up on plane it handled like a dream at high speed. No outdrive problems whatsoever.
Otherwise this is an exceptional boat from the hull design to the seating. It is an awesome family boat with plenty of room and handles choppy water well. I just had the sterndrive serviced and a new gimbal bearing installed. I see used Cobalts of this vintage on craigslist and on other used boat sites. Its a heavy boat 4,300 empty, but it is so well built and trailers well.
The 23BR has a head. The 21BR is similar. Check out 1986-1990 Cobalts they are reasonably priced 10K - 15K and usually well maintained.
I have no desire to replace this Boat as it serves me well and looks great.
