Bayliner 185 engine over heating

Hi there,
Went out today and while leaving harbor slowly no problems. As I applied more revs and got up to speed I heard the beep noise that I only get when starting the engine. Also spotted the temp gauge had move from the centre to the right showing over heating. Stopped the boat and checked the engine and felt some of the pipes. One of them was very hot and the others not so hot. See pics

Not sure if it's related but when I switch off engine it splutters for a few seconds before eventually stopping. Also, think I saw more smoke than usual the other day

Any ideas what might be causing this?

My first thought is a faulty thermostat. But you will get more knowledgeable responses if you post your problem over in the Mercruiser forum section.
