I recently purchased a 2006 Azure 238 with a 5.7 liter MercCruiser. It came with a 24 inch prop. With this combo, it barely does 44 mph, and according to the tach it revs up to 5800 rpm. The engine supposedly develops peak power from 4800-5200 rpm. Do I need a 26 inch prop?

Re: Prop for Azure 238

Is MPH per the boat's speedometer or GPS? Do not trust the speedometer.

Does the boat have a Faria tachometer? The Faria tach in my 2007 Azure malfunctions with amazing regularity. Some on the forum would suggest that engine RPM's are electronically limited to the max by the ECM.

Boat does have a Faria tach. I borrowed a "shop tach" which shows max. 5200 rpm while the Faria says 5800. According to MercCruiser the peak power is 4800-5200, with a rev. limiter that kicks in at 5300 rpm. Speed measured with GPS. Might be time to send the Faria tach back. They suppposedly have a lifetime warranty so for $35 they will rebuild it. I still haven't decided if a 26 inch prop would work better than the 24", but I'm not likely to buy one new for $1200 to find out!

Here is a test of the 2013 model (now manufactured by KCS) with a 300 HP 350 Mag, B3 outdrive: Cruisers Sport Series?238 Bow Rider (2013-)?2013? Reviews, performance, compare, price, warranty, specs,Reports,Specifications Layout, video | BoatTEST.com

" .... With about 25 gallons of fuel aboard, two men, and 50 pounds of gear we had a test weight of 5,290 lbs. (2,400 kgs.) We planed out in 3.8 seconds and we reached 30 in 6.9 seconds. Our WOT speed was 48.5 mph at 5300 rpm. ...."

Depending on how yours is equipped and the load, you may be getting all you can out of it especially if the shop tach has it at max RPM.
