If your outboard is capable of being run at a unlock position, that's the way to go, that way if lower leg strikes any hidden underwater object OB will rise and fall freely to where it was originally trimmed.. Will avoid ending suddenly your boating day along expensive repairs to lower leg housing or prop.

Be aware that when throttling while geared at reverse, outbord will tend to rise and in some cases be locked upwards, so throttle much less than when locked.
