Gear oil smell

What does it mean when gear oil smells like brand new vinyl or clear pvc?This happens to be a Johnny 4stroke.

Gear oils stinks, not sure it smells like vinyl, but it stinks.

Every brand of gear oil I have used marine or automotive stinks like that...Nothing wrong with it but some brands stink worse than others.

I know the Mercury stuff smells pretty bad.
