Have an old chest that a yougun decided to carve on. I sanded down the finish and the scratches but those areas are now much lighter. Will the new finish match the wood up? I don't want to put a coat on then have to sand it back off and if i sand off all the old finish and it doesn't darken back up it won't match the sides and front.

Wipe it with a damp rag. That will simulate a clear coat. You'll have to do another final sanding because this will raise the grain, but you will see what you have.

Also, doing that I see two scratches I didn't get all the way out so regardless thanks for the tip.
