I'm working on a spreadsheet and I'm stumped on one math calculation. I have a ratio question that my mind can't get around. So I thought I'd try you guys.

My ratio is 5:2. I need, in decimal form, the 5:2 ratio of 1. The answer would be two numbers adding up to 1. don't forget to show your work...

Any helpers? Do you need more info?

^^^ Concur: divide the left side by the right side of the colon, and round to the nearest 100th. (At least the way I was always taught)

Ratio = 5:2 / Decimal = 2.5

Thanks for the responses, but not what I need.

Let me reword the question.

If I had 1 dollar and had to split it between two people at a ratio of 5:2, how much would each person get. And don't round off to the nearest penny.

Grandma has 1 dollar and she wants to split it between her grandsons Jimmie and Joey. Using Grandma reasoning, she determined that a ratio of 5:2 is fair because Jimmie got all A's and Joey only got Cs. How much will each grandson receive?

In her head, she divided 100 pennies by 7 and each seventh is worth 14.285714 cents.

So Jimmie got 5/7ths of the $1 or 71.42857 cents and a cookie to make up for the rounding error, while Joey got 28.571428 cents and no cookie because he had no A's on his report card.

a/b = 5/2
a+b = 1
b = 1-a
a / (1-a) = 5/2
2a = 5-5a
7a = 5
a = 5/7
b = 2/7

In pennies
(5/7) $ *100cents/$ = 500/7 = 71cents
a = 71cents
b = 29 cents

1/7 = Y

For the side that gets 5 portions, they get 5 x Y

For the side that gets 2 portions, they get 2 x Y

I do find it's difficult cutting those pennies into smaller pieces though!

I'll give you credit for getting it first. Now we know why you get paid the big bucks for the Mod job. You must have known my name is Joe and would end up with no cookie and and no A's.:)

Thanks to all.
