FYI Ore freighter stuck in heavy ice for a couple of days now north east of Cleveland.. Us Coast Guard ice breaker (Bristol Bay) is trying to get her out along with a bigger Canadian ice breaker. (Samuel Risley)

If the name (Anderson) sounds familiar it's because she was with the Edmund Fitzgerald the night she sank.

Arthur M. Anderson was built in Lorain, Ohio in 1952, is 767 feet long and flies a U.S. flag - See more at: http://duluthshippingnews.com/ship0151/#sthash.nnoZq2qo.dpuf

The Bristol Bay can break 2 ft ice continually, and up to 3 ft by ramming, Samuel Anderson can do 3 ft continually abut can not find how much by ramming. They need something that can get in there and break it up. If all else is a fails, they can use explosives.

Here is a good pic showing the size difference between the two vessels.

I was on the USCGC Burton Island, lot bigger breaker but she was sold for scrap in 1982 (she could break up to 8 feet). The Coast Guard doesn't have any large breakers on the east coast. The current Polar class breakers need to be replaced

I believe the Anderson's home port is in Duluth. I see it all the time when crossing the bridge into Mn.......

Looks like all three are on their way. The Bristol Bay had to go to Cleveland for fuel, need the weight, The Samuel Risley got the Anderson on her way.
Nice pic alldodge, big difference in size.
Thanks for your service.

Looks like only 2 boats out on Erie now. The Anderson and icebreaker Risley off Ashtubula and an oiler at anchor of Port Dover, Ont with a Canadian Icebreaker moving towards it. You can follow their progress at;

If my memory is right this is the second year in a row that Erie has almost completely iced over.

I got a close up look at the Risley the other year when it was docked at Parry Sound. A friend of ours works on the base there. It may not be the biggest but it's pretty impressive just the same.

The USCGC Willow is a 225' ocean-going buoy tender/ice breaker (compared to the Bay-series at 140') and is on the east coast, but she is currently busy.

Bristol Bay is there too, she left Cleveland about noon or so. Clearing the way to Detroit.

Try this link: Shows a few more ships. Another Can. Icebreaker and two tankers all getting on their way.

Yep, I watch that site sometimes and it does seem to be more up to date. It shows the Risley ahead of the Anderson with both making 12 knots.

A friend of mine used to be OIC at USCG Station Erie and I had several tracking programs bookmarked to check and see if he was as busy as he claimed in the summer. Strange how sometime one site or the other seems to completely lose the AIS data.

Cool sites y'all - I checked marine traffic AIS from time to time to see where a friend of mine's son was (oil rigs). The boat nerd one I hadn't seen.

The Anderson is a boat I check in on from time-to-time. Kinda' a part of history if you know the Lakes at all.

FYI...The Anderson is headed home to Wisconsin, with a pusher tug and both ice cutters Can/US in the area for assistance.
