The Decorah eagles had some drama establishing the nest. A couple of weeks ago, a pair of Great Horned Owls decided they liked the nest and there were a few battles over it. I read in the paper this morning that the owls haven't been seen for 5 or 6 days so I guess they moved on. They were hoping the GHOs might decide to use the old eagle nest which still has a camera on it but not so far.

And to think Ben Franklin wanted the turkey to be the national symbol.

The old nest is reportedly disintegrating from the bottom and the eagles decided it wasn't safe to raise a family. Sure hope the new eaglet(s) have better luck than last year. Only one survived. :blue:

Them eagles in Iowa have been a cool place for me to view on the web for some time. It has a relaxing feel to it.

I'm surprised that GA_ didn't jump in on the one-upmanship with his state eagles...:D

Franklin never publically opposed the BE other than in a letter to his daughter making a case for the turkey since the national seal looked like one. He did made a good case for the rattlesnake as a symbol, though.

Eagles often build a new nest. Nobody but the eagles know the reasons to build a new nest. Their current nest is nestled soundly in the crook of three branches 60' up in a cottonwood. The nest from two seasons ago was huge and built on big branches that were more offset from the main trunk and 70-80' up.

Decorah has twenty eaglets raised to fledge. After fledge it is all about nature and their interaction with world beyond the nest.
Life outside the nest has taken an ugly side, at times.

Berry U eagles are copy cats. Decorah eagles are the original. ;) I've never seen a Berry eagle covered with snow while sitting on the eggs. :joyous:

Decorah 2-20-12. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-V82LfzXM2w Mom shakes off the snow. Pretty cool how weather-proof the eagles are. The snow just shakes off.

Eagle cams are in full swing across the U.S and the world.

I remember when Decorah was a sensation as it approached a stunning 100 million views.
"yawn" that was so 200 million views ago.

Decorah lost one last year, though all had some trouble after fledging. One was electrocuted, one broke his wing and is at the SOAR rehab site. The remaining eagle has a transmitter and looks to be enjoying South Iowa.

Southwest Florida has had two bad years. Sadly, the eldest of their two eagles have died in the nest two years in a row.

Decorah's juvie, from 2014, known as "Four" was found electrocuted by a power pole on Tuesday, March 2nd in SE Iowa
http://raptorresource.blogspot.com/2015/03/decorah-eaglet-four-electrocuted.html
Only remaining juvie from the 2014 nest is at SOAR rehab and will be trained as an educational eagle since he will not ever fly.

Decorah has three eggs right now and hatches should start late next week.

Southwest Florida's Eagle Dad, Ozzie is at the CROW rehab site after being recovered with a broken shoulder bone.
His remaining eaglet, E6, is very near fledge and Ozzie should be released in about 4 weeks.

Went to the Kennedy Space Center last week and they give you a pass by viewing of a nest that has been in continuous use since before 1961. This year there are 2 fledglings on the nest.

Kind of a surprise they don't have a camera on that nest.
