around here we have Rawhide, (troubled kids) but not sure if they take national donations. as far as vets go, I don't know of any that take old cars.

Do the charity a favor.
Sell the car yourself, and donate the cash.

Many will take the car, Good will, salvation army, don't know about vet ones, you could make a call. Cash is better then the car but many put on commercials just to get the cars. You get to write off it as a tax deduction (only what it's worth), and they sell all cars and stuff at auction later.

Edit: you could also call a local school and many have used them for fund raisers. One dollar for every time someone wants to hit it with a sledge hammer. They remove all the glass and when all done, they sell it to a scrap yard for 200 to 250 a ton.

Just be selective about what charity you decide on, many charities are really not offering too much up to the actual charity. Do your homework so the donation actually goes to the cause you select.

another thing you could consider is donating to a high school for shop classes. I brought in a bunch of small engines when I worked for a small engine manuf. the school loved getting new engines to train the kids on.

Uhhh, not any more. What you can (legally) deduct will be the price the non-profit got for it, and they will send you the paperwork to support the deduction. The better condition when donated, the more it will bring at auction, which is where most will go ...

Check with some local junk yards. Around here there is a program where you can donate a car and you can select a charity to receive the money from the profit.

A toyota that runs and is cheap on craigslist will be gone before you get the paperwork filled out for a charity.

Yep! Put it on Craigslist and you will have more emails than you know what to do with.

I agree, coming from the standpoint of a charity, do them a favor and sell the car and donate the proceeds ... If you donate the car, they will wholesale it and you will get less credit and they will get less money, plus they incur transportation, storage, and selling fees. In the end, they may lose money because of your generosity. Instead, post it on Craigslist or another free selling site, sell it yourself, and give the proceeds to the charity of your choice. You will have to deal with the time and effort to sell it, but you will get more tax credit because it will actually generate income for the charity.
