Well I have been offered a job with Marinette Shipbuilding in Marinetter WI. I have several questions if anyone has some information on them?

1) What is the housing and job market like in the Marinette area? How hard would it be for my wife to find a decent paying job?

2) What is the average price for a 2000-2400 SF home?

3) What is the average boating season? Not necessarily cold weather but how often can you really enjoy the water? In Orange Park, I usually boat year round. Is it feasible in Marinette?

4) What would the cost of living be like compared to the Greater Jacksonville Fl area?

5) Finally, does anyone have any insight into Marinette Shipbuilding?

While i have been in the SHip Repair industry for many years, This would be my first experience with New Construction. I am a true southern boy, the farthest north i have ever been to live is Norfolk VA and i am not real sure i can handle the weather extremes up there.

If you don't mind a little frost/ice/snow you could probably boat sometime in May through sometime in October or November. The deer hunting is great. Don't know much about jobs and all but this may help. http://www.city-data.com/city/Marinette-Wisconsin.html Green Bay is about 40 miles away, it's a pretty decent town....and of course they do have the Packers so what more do you need!;)

Define "boat". I boat from late April until Late October.....but I am fishing and not tubing or skiing (for that it is pretty much June,July, August...)

Marinette is close enough to the Bay that it stays a little warmer and usually you get a little less snow than you would as you get away from the Lake. I have 40acres just south of Marinette off HWY 41 that we hunt on.....its going to be a shocker from what you are used to. I enjoy that type of weather, but then again I enjoy living here. The four seasons are great. Fall is beautiful. Summer is still hot (if you like that) and winter is well.....I LOVE the cold.

The weather can be extreme at times. I can recall a few years ago we had a week in March in the mid 80's and then had 2ft of snow 2 weeks later. I have a screen shot on my phone's homepage from winter that shows the time and temperature that I have been looking at a lot this week just to remind me.... The temp on the picture is -24F........yesterday was 103F. I prefer the -24....I am dying up here right now.

Well, this is small town America, population 10,000, not much to the north but wonderful forests.
Real city life, shopping, casinos, night life, as it is, is 40 miles south, Green Bay, then Appleton.

The area has a rich shipbuilding history dating back, well, way back.

Yes it gets cold in the winter, and the snow falls, but you only need the air conditioning a couple weeks a year, if that.

If you are going to have an outside job, its cold. If you are inside, its warm. :)

Housing costs are low, even for Wisconsin.
But if you are looking at 2400', then it will likely be newer, expect to pay in the 200-400k range for a nice home, depending on age, and if it is waterfront or inland. There are a few large million$ estates in the area, but not many.

Its about a 97% white community, but open and friendly to all.
Green bay is much more racially and ethnically diverse, and offers a wide variety of entertainment options, as well as some food.

There is a lot of good info on the Wikipedia page below.

Boating year round, only if you iceboat.

Soft water boating, May through October. Enjoyable? open to interpretation.
I know several people that are on the water for 6 month straight, and some that only venture out when the temps are high and the wind from the west, so their boating is limited.

I have no idea what the cost of living is in Jacksonville, and have no idea what your personal expenses or lifestyle would dictate, but this area is generally cheap, on a national scale.

The good paying jobs are for the professionals, the rest of us live cheap. 50k is a real nice income for the area.

Don't have any idea what your wife's skill set is, or what type of job she would be seeking, or what you consider a decent paying job.
Plan on her needing to commute to Green Bay.
Or you commuting from Green Bay.
Or somewhere in between.

I have a cousin, and a family friend that live between Marinette and Green Bay, they love it.

Would I move there? You bet, if I had the skill set to land a job there.
But then, I can't imagine living in a flat hot place like Florida. :)

Fly up for a visit and check it out.

Re: Marinette WI Jobs/Housing

My wife is an Office Manager for a busy 6 Doctor Practice. She has been in the medical field for over 30 years and makes over $30.00 hour here. Our Lifestyle is modest, we do not try to keep up with the Jones but when we spend, we want something that will last us for a long time. Jacksonville has a fairly high cost of living, but i have been in places that were higher. I currently commute 100 miles a day, so commutting is not a problem. My wife is a city girl, she has tobe within 20 minutes of a Target and other great shopping areas for her. For me, I could be in the middle of no where and love it. The Job i am being offered is a foreman position which means that i would be outside on the deck 60-75% of the time, and paperwork and meeting the rest. It is very tempting, Just not sure that i can handle the cold and not be able to be on the boat as much as i enjoy.

Green Bay and Appleton should have job opportunities and shopping for the wife.

You could always rent for a year, see if you like it, decide what area suits you best, then buy if you so choose.

The cold is all about attitude. You prepare for it mentally, and attack it.

Down time away from the boat can be spent on the snowmobile, atv, or in front of the fireplace.
The four seasons make you appreciate what each has to offer.

And there are only 8 bad traffic days a year, which means don't head south out of Green Bay for about 2 hours after the game ends.

I live 25 miles south. There are LOTS of houses for sale all around here (as everywhere I guess). Marinette Marine is a good company to work for, have a couple of friends that are there. I think you'll find the cost of living to be a lot less than you are used to. I go up there to shop and avoid the crowds in Green bay, but I doubt you will think there are crowds in Green Bay, LOL.

Bought my place two yrs ago. Smaller than you are looking for. But, 1800 sqft (one one level, getting old didn't want any stairs), 28 X 68 heated and air conditioned garage, on 10 acres, under 150K to give you an idea.

And, OH yeah, GO PACK!!

boating on the bay of Green Bay is April thru November (Ice out is in April, weather gets rough in November). Not sure what your wife does, however Green Bay is about an hour away, Appleton is an additional half hour away. Health Care is a constant employment source. Cost of living will be a bit higher than jacksonville area. Unfortunately the marine market is cyclical. Both Marinette Marine and Bay Ship are part of the fincantieri marine group which does have a long term contract.

If you like hunting and fishing, the Menomonee River area provides both. Some of the best Walleye and small mouth fishing that I have enjoyed.

Right across the bay is Ellison Bay, and just south of that is Sister Bay - Home of JJ's La Peurta. A nice little restaurant with a serious margarita problem :) :)

The gales of November........... I live in the far NW corner of WI, but judging by the map, the best bet for your wife would be Green Bay, as others have stated... During the winter months think snowmobiling/ice fishing. Going from FL to WI the weather will do a 180. Yes, it will be a shock to the system.....

There's a reason a lot of northerners move south when they get older, if you move up there you'll realize what that reason is during your first winter.

Re: Marinette WI Jobs/Housing

another thing to remember, while rain in florida causes many people to put their wipers on high, turn their flashers on and drive at 35mph (never understood that myself). The late fall rains may contain sleet. up here many run winter only tires in the winter (November - April) and have fun driving in the snow. during the first snow fall, find an abandoned parkinglot and practice skid control. If you have a rear wheel drive, you can have a blast doing donuts

make sure your vehicle(s) anti-freeze is good for -40 (50/50 mix)and has a recent thermostat and a good battery. I know too many people that forget that when they come up and visit.

As a northerner who lived in the country next to the Pacific ocean north of Mexico, south of Canada I learned to love winter when I moved back. Yes there are 4 seasons Virgil.

The weather takes getting used to, but for those of us who LOVE it, I doubt we could imagine living in a different climate.....

This is what Fall looks like......this was the second weekend in October a few years ago. It was 34F and sleeted a little while we were out there, but we got some decent Walleyes.

This was ice fishing in early February. It is -25F in that picture......and yes my hands were cold. That Fish froze solid not long after pulling it through the ice.
