Regular Excedrin vs Excedrin Migraine - what's the difference?

I get alot of headaches, and I usually take Excedrin Migraine for them. Recently I noticed that both Excedrin Migraine, and "regular" Excedrin list 250mg asprin, 250mg acetaminophen, and 65mg caffeine as their active ingredients.

The difference is, the Migraine medicine says on the bottle "Do not take more than 2 geltabs in 24 hours", while the regular kind says "take 2 geltabs every 6 hours as neccessary".

The pills also look exactly the same. Does anybody know what the difference is? If I get more than one headache in 24 hours I usually just tough it out because of that warning...but if I can take them every 6 hours, that would be much better. :)

Don't know, but have a friend that is a pharmacist. Not your regular Kmart or Walgreens scrip filler (no offense intended), but an expert. Will try to get in touch with him and run it past him. May take a week or more, he just left on vacation.

Don't know, and I don't get too many headaches, but when I get them they are pretty bad news. Usually the only thing that cuts them is Panadol or Midol! Yea, that's what my wife says too, "Must be YOUR time of the month!"

ZmOz

I think roscoe so far seems to be your best bet. We had a discussion here about a year ago on Migraines. This doesnt tie in diredtly to your question about Excedrin but as a Migrain junky I always read anything I can on the subject

http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=20;t=006507#000015

Cheers
Link

Have you tried to take the regular Excedrin?

If the ingrediants are the same, take the regular strength instead and see if they will work. This way you can take them every six hours.

It may be the inactive ingrediants that are different. This may be why you cant take the Excedrin Migrain except every twelve hours.

They don't seem very inactive if they're so strong you can only take them every 24 hours!

I dont know the difference, but I will tell you with all the cronic(sp?) back pains I have had...I started taking excedrin tension pills. and those little things actually worked better for the pain, then some of my prescriptions(sp?)

Those work good.

Dude, if you always get headaches, you might have that checked out by a doctor. It is not normal for a healthy adult to have chronic headaches. I used to get headaches all the time, went to my doctor and he told me that my blood pressure was dangerously high. My father on the other hand, had chronic headaches, and would not go to the doctor, and died from a hemmorage. Get yourself checked out. Take care.

It's good to get high, and never come down...

Also, just think of all that damage you are doing to your liver taking all that acetomenaphine.

LOL @ Aspeck. Dont feel like the only one who does that. Those work great on headaches.

I personally cant tell a difference between the two excedrins, with the exception of price.

Been checked. Had a couple cat scans, some blood tests, went to a few specialists...nobody knows why I get the headaches.

I am a bit worried about that...that's why I'm asking this question. The doctor did tell me to take Excedrin though. I have a prescription that doesn't have any acetaminophen, but the side effect after it takes away the headache is a pain in the neck.

Re: Regular Excedrin vs Excedrin Migraine - what's the difference?

My mother used to be plagued by severe headaches and migraines after she cracked her skull in a car crash.
Her neurologist told het to take tylenol and asprin-with a strong cup of coffee at the very first sign. She has been doing this since the fall of 1976, and it works 99% of the time. She buys the generics and keeps them in her purse, but only needs them about once a month now.

Another thing that has helped her emmensely, she goes to a massage therapist every 2 weeks to have her shoulders and neck massaged.

Seems the neurologist had a handle on the treatment long before the pharmacuticals put it in a bottle and added their name to it.

From what I've heard, the two are identical except for the little pamphlet that comes in the box or is printed on the box has information about migraines.

...The store brand works just as good for me too.. :)

Could it be that the Excedrin migraine has time releasing properties?... My instincts leads me to believe that it is just another marketing ploy to confuse the already confused public :(

Re: Regular Excedrin vs Excedrin Migraine - what's the difference?

ZmOz

I spoke with a pharmacist friend today, and he said that it "may be" related to "Rebound Headaches". He stated it is also a marketing ploy, aimed at those with migrain headaches, (in his store the Excedrin Migrain cost a little more than the Extra Strength Excedrin) but, those of you with migrains are more likely to suffer from rebound headaches from taking to much medication. That is why they recommend the different, lower dosage. He also stated if you felt you needed to take the additional doses, to follow the directions on the regular Excedrin. He also stated that the off-brands with the same ingrediants should work just as well.
