Bought 4 of these for Christmas gifts for the kids' houses. The first one I checked is on the list. Filled the recall form the internet site for Kidde and they said a new one will be sent out.

any mod want to merge this thread with the other?

or keep on here in dockside where it gets more traffic than safety?

Personally my thoughts are even though it's not the norm for iboats to have two of the same topics going at the same time, I think with this one we'll all "survive";) by making this one exception to the policy due to the severity of safety involved.... Having one here in Dockside Chat and one in Boating Safety should be okay especially knowing that not all members frequent multiple sub-forums. Plus chances are having yours in Boating Safety might be seen by more members browsing the main home front page vs inside a sub-forum for a little bit anyways as it's a slower moving sub-forum.

Before VB5 crashed the place I recall Moderators had a place that they were able to make announcements to the whole forum such as the Help Tip for example found within all the "Engine Repair and Maintenance" sections. Now the only ones that are able to make announcements or make multiple stickies without having to basically go to each section after making copies of the original topic/poster then placing them there is the administrators of the forum....Wish we could as your idea is a good one.:encouragement:

I agree. It won't hurt.

"The recall involves 134 models of Kidde fire extinguishers manufactured between January 1, 1973 and August 15, 2017, including models that were previously recalled in March 2009 and February 2015." Isn't that all of them made in the past 44 years?

Yeah, if it was only in Boat Safety I might not have seen it for a year or two. Sounds like pretty much everything with a plastic handle or push button. The one in my boat has the push button and you test it by pushing the button down and if it comes back up. it's good. I haven't tested it for awhile (OK, since Hector was a pup) so I gave it a try. I had to put in on the floor and use both thumbs to push the button down.

Kidde has done a good job with the online form - simple and straightforward. They will send you a replacement and instructions for disposal of the old one. Here's the link:

Went down to the shop yesterday and start pulling them out of my boats, vehicles, and equipment. Eleven out of twelve are on the list. Plus the three I gave out at Christmas for the kids.

Hey dw, thanks for the mention of the online recall form. Already submitted for mine.

As GA indicated, if you have a Kidde extinguisher in your house or boat it's probably on the recall list. This is going to cost them a fair bit. I really hate to see this. I think they're a good company but even with the best something can go wrong.

I did a lot of business with Walter Kidde & Co back in the late 60s when I was a Procurement Specialist in the Air Force. It was a given back then that they were the best there was in the fire extinguisher business and, of course, the Air Force bought a fair number. Given the way they're handling the recall especially the online recall form, I'm inclined to say they still are.

Got my first replacement extinguisher today. Came Fedex with a return label and instructions to use the same packaging to return the old one.

they said 15-20 days and the first one came in 13 so looks like Kidde is taking care of business. This has to be a heckuva financial hit for them.

Got my first one a week ago, have 3 to go. I wonder if they wait until they get the one back before send another? Long drawn out process if so, I may have to go buy a new one so I can rest assured there's a good extinguisher in my boat.
