The vent cabinets in and a new one over the sink. Also not the open faced one on the far left - had it made to handle my cutting boards (bottom) and half sheet baking pans (up top). The light was over the sink; moved to the center and put an LED strip under the sink box.

A bunch of boring pics then this. Note the micro in the corner. I used black iron pipe and stanchions on a peice of .75" ply going to trim out with my old oak barn wood but need to plane some out first. Also need to go buy the handles for the vent doors, just put them up last night.

a close up of the micro shelf. Note the lockout device for the exposed wires for the over the sink light fixture.

Spice shelf

full 2 x 8 x 10

View attachment 3TxN_3cOLe8rVRTODjpIM_jSOYhHJH6j-vmyzHlkRVvq-gc0d5sMeDyQu0ZZIriFkoHo6x7AifFrZbJKFzdcYyu3lTENRKWmu54x

still need to pass thru a couple times but I'm going with this side. Lots of bug trails, splits and a couple nice knots - especcially the one on the long side that will become the front edge

View attachment KvFvBy_PkBrVAlbHwVHjf9gxlZM9HFrf41y0se-UnGO2I12fk2dCm9quBZf9eL7hpk5WLSv-2W2enb_UJ3oMUH2vKcH-gAEi8792

this side would be a bit more boring, even though it will have spice jars on it covering. The splits on the far end is my drop side too much termite damage so most of those splits will be gone.

and i'm on my next call meeting....

wire brush on the face. Cleans it up, give some definition by removing softer wood and just looks cool. That knot also is offset so i left that way instead of ripping straight. More cool looks.

there was way more termite damage than I thought. If you look I cut an L shape - the shinny part goes over the box i built for the hole then it drops down to a full 2" face. It make it looks more 'meaty' without sacrificing height avail on the shelf.

So durhams... Then in addition to my planned screw from the bottom up I'll also slather on a bunch of glue. Should be good it is just a spice shelf.

To relate to boats - when I was looking at the 10 foot piece and trying to determine where I would cut to use- i was tapping alot. All sounded good except for the first couple inches. Turns out - it was about 12 inches.

DO NOT TRUST TAPPING ON A TRANSOM!!!!

ok not sure what pics do or do not show and rather than updating all these I just completed a thread on my forum. If you want to be bored take a look.

Short story, did boxes over existing and new fronts on uppers. Oil paint on all and a couple custom things like an open faced place for my sheet pans and cutting board and a pull out trash drawer. I did a cool microwave shelf and spice shelf.

$3300 all in, I installed new boxes, pained frames etc. He did the rest and painted new and existing fronts. That price did not include the $900 range vent however if you ever redo a kitchen I highly recommend getting a higher end vent. My wife doesn't mind deep frying in the house now...

I forgot to move thread to public area. This should work

well, almost four year old thread. Been an interesting four years:

got laid off
on my second job since then, pulling in a whopping $14/hr
added a 600 sq ft sunroom
new dishwasher (high end Bosch)
just this week two new HVAC units plus some joe designed custom return vents (tricky stuff)
sold the truck, got a VW station wagon (TDI)
one of the boys almost died in a wreck
got some puppies
new floors
granite countertops
quit smoking
sold two boats (trying on the Carver)

prob a bunch of stuff I don't remember.

We have since repainted the kitchen. When we added the sunroom, while we still have decent light, the reduction added to the dark brown cabinets was too much so we went white uppers and a light blue/grey lowers.

The new dishwasher is waiting on my cabinet guy to make me a panel.

we had three diff floor coverings to see when you walked into the front door, now one - and eliminated three thresholds

Did have a scare. Over the 13 years we've been there both the dishwasher and the fridge have had a leak. No biggie just a bit of slow leak which of course I repaired. I also do at least a once per year tour under the house looking for termites and water damage. nothing, all good.

well - apparently near as we can figure is that the builder lived on vinyl sheet goods until right before he sold us the house - which explains why the house look mostly brand new. So ripping up the floor and the underlayment exposed this:

tk1vFDF.jpg

I was scared sh.tless. Good news is that it was all on top on the sheet goods, not soaked into the subfloor. A couple hours of bleach and old fashioned oil based Kilz and we are good. Bonus - me and the wife are not as snotty as we used to be every morning. I guess we now know why.

Life throws so many wrenches into the works. But it is how you deal with them that truly makes the difference. While you have had many issues, everyone is alive and well and that in itself is a blessing.

The wife and I in the last couple years have had a brother-in-law die, a brother die, and recently my father pass as well. So everyone is dealt different scenarios and has to move forward the best they can.

Here's hopping your issues are minimal and vanish and you can still enjoy life and one day look back and smile about them...

We did the kitchen in our summer place 2 summers ago. It wasn't as inconvenient as remodeling the bathroom but it was a pain making most meals out of a microwave. Like any other job plan, plan plan. We lived with a living room full of cabinets for weeks. The cab supplier shorted me the centre cab and a few uppers. If you have to store cabs etc. inside the home store them so the cab you need first, like a centre cab, store them so the 1st cabs are not buried behind an entire kitchen of cabs are. Plan to infinity.

If you are 5'3" tall don't get cabs that go to 8'. Scotts cabs are too high for us and my wife is 6'1" tall and I was 5'11'. Another point I would like to make is about the very popular today open concept kitchen. It sure looks nice with nothing on the counters and in and around the sink. Nothing drives me bonkers since I did the open concept for the kitchen/family room than trying to sit down and retire to the family room with a snifter of Brandy and a smoke when I smokes and stare at a kitchen full of dirty dishes and used pots and pans everywhere. It is far from relaxing. We sold the home in the city and moved to the lake full time, during the reno the last thing I was going to do is an open concept. I opened up the site lines so I can see the living room and lake but not the sink and countertops with pots and pans on them.
