I am looking at a new used trailer for my 24' aluminum boat, which someone in the past had welded on a 3500 lb capacity coupler. Obviously I would have to replace it, but should I go with a 6000 lb standard coupler for $20 or a 21,000 lb trigger type for $100? The axles on the trailer are 3500 lb each (tandem axle trailer). My boat weights 3800 lbs or so fully loaded and I'm estimating the trailer weights 1000. So loaded I'm estimating 4800 lb GTW. I like the standard type of latch but would the extra safety margin benefit me?

Thanks!

IMO the extra safety would not be necessary, but if something happened, and your the one which will answer the question (if any) then go with what you like best. Don't think anything would happen even if there was a accident, 6K is plenty, but I like to over build things any way.
