I've had 4 full size Gm vehicles and 3 had something in the trans. The one that didn't I got rid of at 13k miles cause the heater didn't work. The way these are designed with a 1-2 clutch pack and a 3-4 pack is probably the flaw. 1-2 and 3-4 apply a band where 2-3 completely changes packs. Plastic pistons, o-rings and pressure are key to making this all work, so temp needs to be not too high and not too low and over time these parts get hard, affecting the trans negatively. Mine acts up in the winter, I guess cause fluid is thicker and it can't pump the heavier fluid as well. I put cardboard in front of the cooler and make sure to go easy on the 2-3 shift. I wouldn't say avoid these vehicles, but check it out well. Another option is a ford expedition, but that will cost you a little more.
